Best Way to Fly to Cairns from the USA
Flying to Cairns from the United States is a big trip, but it’s worth every hour in the air.
Just to think, on the other side of that journey awaits Tropical North Queensland, home to the Great Barrier Reef, the ancient Daintree Rainforest, and wildlife unlike anything you’ve ever seen.
And we think one of the best ways to get there is Fiji Airways.
Here’s why, and what to expect on the journey.

Fly to Cairns from the USA on Fiji Airways: Here's Why It's Our Favorite Route
When our travelers ask how to get to Cairns from the U.S., Fiji Airways is one of our first recommendations. The routing is smart, the service is exceptional, and the stopover in Fiji adds a little magic to what could otherwise feel like an exhausting slog across the Pacific.
The numbers back it up, too. Fiji Airways recently took home two top honors at the 2026 APEX Best in Airline Awards: Best Cabin Service and Best Food & Beverage in the South Pacific. These awards are based on over one million verified passenger votes collected through TripIt by Concur, meaning real travelers, on real flights, rated Fiji Airways the best in the region for service and food.
And this wasn’t a one-off. Fiji Airways was also named an APEX World Class Airline for 2026, placing it among the top 10 airlines globally. It’s the only carrier in Oceania to receive that distinction, and the smallest airline by fleet size ever to earn it!

The Route: USA to Cairns via Nadi
Los Angeles to Cairns via Nadi
Fiji Airways flies from Los Angeles (LAX) to Nadi, Fiji (NAN), then connects onward to Cairns Airport (CNS). It’s a natural two-stop routing that breaks up the journey beautifully.
The LAX to Nadi leg is a long one (roughly 10 hours) but it’s the kind of flight that goes by faster than you’d expect when the service is this good. From Nadi, the flight to Cairns is short and easy at 4 hours and 55 minutes, and before you know it, you’re touching down in Tropical North Queensland.
East Coast travelers can connect to LAX before departing internationally, or travel through other Fiji Airways routes. Our Travel Advisors can help you find the best connections from your home city.
Total travel time from Los Angeles to Cairns runs approximately 18–20 hours. From the East Coast, plan for 25–30 hours. You’ll also cross the International Date Line, so you’ll “lose” a day heading over and gain it back on the way home.

The Service is Genuinely Warm
Fiji Airways earned its 2026 APEX Best Cabin Service award the old-fashioned way, by being exceptionally good at making passengers feel welcome. The crew brings a warmth that’s distinctly Fijian: attentive, genuine, and never rushed. On a 10-hour flight across the Pacific, that makes a real difference.
The Food Has Taken a Serious Leap
Fiji Airways’ 2026 APEX Best Food & Beverage win is well-deserved. The airline has rolled out a new Pacific Rim menu inspired by flavors from Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and North America, with a focus on local Fijian ingredients.
In Business Class, passengers enjoy Dine on Demand, featuring dishes freshly plated onboard, paired with wine selected by crew who’ve undergone specialized culinary and wine service training. Thoughtful touches like artisanal Fijian chocolate and handcrafted Vau flowers make it a real deal dining experience.
Economy Class has been significantly upgraded as well, with new meal options, cocktails, mocktails, hot chocolate, and a wider range of snacks and beverages throughout the flight. This is one of the things that makes the Fiji Airways economy experience stand apart. It genuinely feels like the airline cares about every passenger on board.

The Entertainment Will Keep You Busy
Ten hours across the Pacific goes by faster than you’d think, and Fiji Airways makes it easier with a solid in-flight entertainment setup on their Airbus A350.
Every seat has its own personal touchscreen loaded with movies, TV shows, music, and games on demand. Both cabins have USB ports and AC power outlets at every seat, so your devices stay charged for the journey.
Bring your own noise-canceling headphones for the best experience. The airline provides headsets, but your own will be more comfortable over 10 hours.
One connectivity highlight: Fiji Airways now offers complimentary full-flight messaging Wi-Fi for Economy Class passengers on their A350 and B737 aircraft. Staying in touch with family back home — or letting your hotel in Cairns know you’re on your way — is seamless and free.

Choosing Your Cabin Class
Economy
Economy on Fiji Airways is a solid long-haul experience, especially with the upgraded food and beverage menu. You’ll also find small amenities awaiting you on your seat: a small pillow and blanket to help you sleep on the flight. Pack your noise-canceling headphones, stay hydrated, and you’ll arrive in Cairns ready to go.
Business Class
For travelers who want to arrive truly rested, whether you’re celebrating a milestone trip, a honeymoon, or just know you need to sleep, Business Class on Fiji Airways delivers. Lie-flat seating, Dine on Demand, premium wines, and that award-winning cabin service. If you’re going to splurge anywhere on this trip, the flight is a worthy place to do it.
A Few Tips for the Long Haul Flight
- Stay hydrated. The dry cabin air works against you. Drink water consistently throughout the flight.
- Move around. Get up, stretch, walk the aisle. Your body will thank you when you land.
- Sleep smart. Try to start adjusting your sleep schedule to Cairns time before you depart.
- Enjoy the food — it’s award-winning. But go easy on the alcohol. It dehydrates you and disrupts sleep. Save the celebrating for when you land in Cairns!

The Stopover in Fiji: A Mini-Adventure Built Into Your Trip
We like to think of a layover in Fiji as a preview of paradise. Even a brief stop gives you a taste of that warm Fijian hospitality the airline is famous for.
As you board off the plane in Nadi and enter the airport, you’ll be greeted by Fijian musicians strumming guitars and ukeleles, singing warm welcomes. It’s a nice distraction as you wait in the customs line.
The Nadi airport itself lends to the perfect idea of an airport layover: uncrowded, easy to navigate, and compact. Plus, the free Quiet Lounge downstairs of the Departures Terminal is hidden away enough to where you can actually find respite and catch up on sleep or emails with lounging booths, cushioned cubby holes and laptop desks.
If your schedule allows, consider extending your Nadi stop by a day or two. We can help you build that into your itinerary. It’s a wonderful way to ease into the trip before arriving in Cairns refreshed and ready to explore.
Arriving in Cairns
Though compact, Cairns Airport is modern, efficient, and welcoming. Fiji Airways is the only international flight that arrives here, which allows for a smooth arrival. This means no crowded arrival terminals, quick baggage claim, and a stress-free start to your Australia adventure.
Plus, you’re instantly transported into tropical mode as you step inside baggage claim, with your bags filing out from the mouths of sea creatures.

From there it’s an easy connection to your hotel, whether you’re heading into the city, up to Port Douglas, or straight out to the reef.
The Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree, and the Atherton Tablelands are all within reach!
When to Book Your Flight
For flights to Australia, booking 6–9 months in advance tends to hit the sweet spot for availability and price.
Shoulder seasons: Australia’s spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) offer fewer crowds, pleasant weather in Tropical North Queensland, and often better fares than the peak December–February period. If avoiding the tourist rush is important to you, these are the sweet spots. To avoid the rainy season in Tropical North Queensland, we recommend visiting in late April to May.
