How to Experience Sydney Like a Local

Visiting Sydney for a few days and want to do as the locals do?

After years of visiting this famous Harbour city, we’ve gathered a list of all the good stuff beneath the city’s surface.

From tantalizing local bites to the best golden beaches, we’ve done the deep dive beyond the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Here are some tips to help you experience Sydney like a local on your trip to Australia:

Imagine taking a ferry daily to commute to work.

That’s just part of the work-life balance for many Sydneysiders (Sydney locals)!

Getting out onto Sydney Harbour’s waters is a must on any visit to this famous Harbour city.

Hop-on hop-off cruises are one of our favorite ways to explore the harbor and see many iconic Sydney sights. It’s also one of the most affordable ways to get out on the water. You’ll see heavy hitters such as the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Cockatoo Island, and Luna Park.

For the more active and adventurous, kayaking on the harbor is an intimate way to see Sydney from a different angle. Enjoy a peaceful paddle under the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, and venture out to hidden gems like Shark Island or Balmoral Beach.

It’s also just an incredibly cool experience you’ll get to brag about back home!

Perhaps my most favorite way of exploring the harbor, however, is by water taxi. These small vessels travel from different points across Sydney Harbour (yep, it’s that big), including ferry wharves, private jetties, marinas, and pontoons.

Many hotels and restaurants set directly on the waterfront have their own piers where you can arrive by water taxi. You’ll make quite the entrance!

Sydney boasts a vibrant food culture, with a fabulous range of cuisines from around the world.

Instead of sticking to familiar chain restaurants, try something new. It’s what travel is all about!

Our favorite breakfast spots include Garcon at Tramsheds, a French cafe with some of Sydney’s best flat whites and brunch menus. For a leisurely morning, try their four course bottomless brunch, with amazing food like squid ink pasta and free-flowing sparkling wine.

Spice Alley is a go-to for South East Asian food, complete with different restaurant stalls that entice with tantalizing aromas. Mr. Wong and Din Tai Fung are the best when it comes to dumplings.

For more Australian flavors, there’s no better classic Aussie food experience than a beetroot burger at a local pub. The Glenmore at the Rocks gets our recommendation, with modern pub fare and affordable daily specials.

With some of the freshest waterways in the world, Australian seafood is a must. Good thing Sydney is home to the largest seafood market in the Southern Hemisphere – the Sydney Fish Market.

Apart from selling fresh catches, the market also features restaurants and cafes serving up delicious bites of sushi, sashimi, oysters, Moreton Bay bugs, and seafood platters.

For a sampling of the best of Sydney Fish Market, grab a sushi donut or sushi taco from Fish Market Cafe. Or snag a serving of seafood mix and chips, featuring fried calamari, fish, and BBQ octopus.

Sydneysiders love to shop local. Markets are where you’ll find true handmade artwork, jewelry, vintage clothing, and delicious street food.

Paddington Markets: Located in the heart of the Paddington neighborhood, Paddington Markets are an easy visit if you’re staying in central Sydney. Held every Saturday, these vibrant markets are set against the backdrop of picturesque Victorian terraces and trendy boutiques.

This market is a fashionista’s paradise, showcasing handmade clothing, accessories, and homewares. It’s the perfect spot to dig up some unique souvenirs or special gifts that really capture the vibe of Sydney.

Rocks Markets: If you’re up for a tasty day out, swing by The Rocks Markets. Situated in the cool, historic Rocks area, these markets are surrounded by cute cobblestone streets and old-school buildings.

The Rocks Markets are on every Saturday and Sunday, lined with stalls selling everything from handmade crafts and unique goods to mouthwatering street food.

Fridays are for the Friday Foodie Market along Playfair Street. Foodies will be in heaven here with all the tasty treats available. You’ll find everything from fancy cheeses and freshly baked goodies to delicious eats from around the world.

Bondi Markets: If you find yourself in Bondi on a Sunday, check out the Bondi Markets! These markets are a perfect blend of fashion, art, and fresh produce just a stone’s throw from the famous Bondi Beach.

Keep an eye out for unique jewelry made from recycled materials, colorful artworks from budding painters, and unique fashion pieces that embody the laid-back Sydney beach vibe.

Paddy’s Market: Paddy’s Market is right in the heart of the city and is open from Wednesday to Sunday. If you’re hunting for a fun shopping experience, this is the spot.

You’ll find a little bit of everything here, from cool souvenirs and clothes to fresh fruits and veggies. You’ll also find artisan vendors displaying handmade jewelry, Aboriginal art, and unique textiles, making it a great spot to snag some special treasures.

Sydney is a patchwork quilt of diverse neighborhoods, each with its own vibe and personality.

Step away from the typical tourist spots and check out city suburbs like Surry Hills, Newtown, and Balmain for a true local’s Sydney experience.

Surry Hills

Just a hop from the bustling city center, Surry Hills is the perfect spot for anyone wanting to score some local finds. If you have a penchant for fashion, Surry Hills is the place to browse through chic boutiques offering everything from high-end labels to one-of-a-kind pieces created by local designers.

Don’t miss stores like The Collector Store for a carefully curated mix of contemporary fashion or Mushu for their unique accessories that showcase Australian craftsmanship.

Spend an afternoon wandering through the area— peek into hidden laneways where you’ll find delightful gems like vintage clothing shops, quirky homeware stores, and cozy little cafes.

Newton

Newton, a vibrant inner-western suburb of Sydney, brims with eclectic culture, culinary delights, and local charm that makes it a must-visit for anyone with extra days in Sydney to spare. Stroll through the streets and discover colorful murals and street art that add character to the suburb.

Newton is a well-known foodie heaven, packed with all sorts of eats from cute little cafes to global restaurants. There’s tons of cuisines on offer, whether you’re craving some Aussie classics, delicious Asian bites, or Mediterranean delights.

Check out local hot spots like Cafe Paci for some modern Aussie dishes, or It’s Time for Thai if you’re in the mood for some real-deal Thai food. And if you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’re in luck—there are plenty of bakeries and dessert shops around to satisfy those cravings!

Balmain

Balmain is where the creatives city dwellers reside, where history seamlessly blends with modernity, all just a short ferry ride from the city. It’s home to many of Australia’s most celebrated writers, actors, filmmakers, musicians, and artists, which is reflected in the local arts scene.

This neighborhood is steeped in history, with many of its buildings dating back to the 1800’s. Grab a pint at historic pubs that have stood the test of time, such as The London Hotel, dating back to 1870. Then make your way to The Bald Rock pub, built in 1876.

One of Balmain’s standout features is its gorgeous waterfront. The harbor views are breathtaking, especially at sunset when the sky lights up into a canvas of fiery colors. Go for a stroll along the waterfront or kick back at one of the foreshore parks.

Sydney is known for its amazing beaches, and not just Bondi Beach. Each beach has its own vibe, perfect for whatever you’re in the mood for.

Manly Beach

Hop on a quick ferry from Circular Quay towards the northern beaches and you’ll find yourself at Manly Beach. Whether you want to swim, catch some waves, or just kick back and sunbathe with a good book, this is the perfect spot.

It’s a favorite among swimmers and surfers alike, providing excellent conditions for both.

Don’t forget to stroll along the famous Manly Scenic Walkway for some stunning views. And with all the cafes, restaurants, and shops right along the beach, it’s the perfect hangout to chill and soak up some good Aussie vibes.

Bronte Beach

Set in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, Bronte Beach is the place to go for a family-friendly atmosphere. This beach features an enclosed rock pool, making it ideal for safe swimming, especially for kids.

Plus, the grassy areas nearby are perfect for picnics and they even have coin-operated BBQ grills. With a beautiful backdrop and the chance to throw some shrimp on the barbie, it’s the classic Sydney beach vibe all wrapped up in one spot.

Freshwater Beach

Known as the birthplace of surfing in Australia, Freshwater Beach is a local favorite that boasts a laid-back vibe. You’ll find this beach just north of Manly.

If you’re looking to catch some waves but want to skip the craziness of Bondi, this is your spot. There’s also the Freshwater Rockpool for if you prefer more enclosed, protected swimming.

The golden sands and clear waters are just gorgeous, plus the views are amazing. Whether you’re a surfer or just want to kick back with a towel, Freshy has got you covered!

Nielsen Park

If you’re after a quieter and more relaxed beach day, you can’t go wrong with Nielsen Park. Tucked away in Sydney Harbour National Park, its calm waters are perfect for a swim.

This beach is much less crowded, so you can kick back and enjoy the scenery without all the hustle. Plus, there are some lovely walking trails, cool historical buildings, and shady picnic spots to hang out in. It’s a sweet spot for families wanting to relax and soak up some sun by the water.

Shelly Beach

Shelly Beach, tucked away in the laid-back Manly area, is the perfect spot for anyone looking to kick back on the sand or dive into some snorkeling fun.

The waters are buzzing with all sorts of marine life, from colorful fish to friendly blue gropers, making this one of Sydney’s best northern beaches for snorkeling.

You’ll find plenty of local spots around to rent snorkeling gear, or if you’re keen, you can join a guided tour to dive into the underwater magic!
