Cook Islands Vacation Guide

With white sandy beaches, crystal-clear lagoons, and lush landscapes, this destination is perfect for adventurers, families, honeymooners, and anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Getting There

To get to the Cook Islands from the US, you will need to make your way to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), San Francisco Airport (SFO), or to Honolulu Airport (HNL) in Hawaii. The main gateway to the Cook Islands is through Rarotonga International Airport (RAR). Air New Zealand offers regular flights from Auckland, and there are connecting services from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu by Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and United. Other airlines, such as Jetstar and Virgin Australia, also provide seasonal or charter flights from Australia. Your About Australia Travel Advisor will determine and book the best flight route for your itinerary.

Transportation

While in the Cook Islands, transportation options to your resort include:

  • Car Rentals: Ideal if you’re staying on the main island of Rarotonga. A car rental allows you to have a day out and explore the inland and coastal scenery of the island. Ask your About Australia Travel Advisor for more information on renting a car in the Cook Islands.

  • Private and Seat-In-Coach Shuttles: Widely available for pre-booking to meet you at the Rarotonga Airport. We always include airport transfers to your hotel from the Rarotonga Airport in our Cook Islands packages.

  • Bicycles and Motor Scooters: Renting a bicycle or motor scooter is a popular way to explore Rarotonga. As the islands are small, many visitors choose to explore Rarotonga and Aitutaki by bike.

  • Sea Planes and Helicopters: Traveling from Rarotonga to Aitutaki or Atiu will require a short flight. Our Cook Islands packages can be upgraded to include flight transfers on request if you’re visiting multiple islands.

Best Time to Visit the Cook Islands

The best time to visit the Cook Islands is during the dry season, which spans from April to November. During these months, expect pleasant temperatures, minimal rainfall, and lower humidity, making it ideal for snorkeling, diving, and exploring the lush islands.

The wet season (December to March) is warmer and more humid, with occasional storms. This is a good time to visit the Cook Islands to avoid any crowds.

Essential Cook Islands Travel Tips

  • Currency: The Cook Islands dollar is the local currency, used alongside the New Zealand dollar. Credit cards are widely accepted, including MasterCard and Visa. American Express is limited, while Discover is not accepted. It’s advisable to carry some cash for local markets and villages.

  • Health & Safety: Make sure to stay hydrated and use sunscreen. Although the Cook Islands are considered safe for tourists, always be vigilant and take standard safety precautions.

  • Respect Local Customs: Dress modestly when visiting villages, and always ask permission before taking photos of locals.

  • Languages: Cook Islanders largely speak Cook Islands Maori and English. The Cook Island greeting for “hello” is “Kia orana.”
