Power and Phone Adapters – USA to Australia

Traveling soon? Make sure your electrical devices are compatible (see Electrical Power Specifications below).

Also, see About Australia‘s recommendations below for purchasing power converter kits, adapters or transformers to meet your travel needs on your vacation to Australia.

Electrical Power Specifications in Australia, New Zealand & Fiji

Voltage (230 Volts):
International AC outlet adapters do not convert electric current. If your appliance does not accept 220-240 volt current, serious damage can result if you do not also use a step down transformer to convert the current to 110-120 volts. Step down transformers convert 220/240 volt electricity to 110/120 volts for American appliances.

Some appliances will show on their “specifications” plate an “input” of 100V-240V which means it will not require a converter. Some appliances (e.g. hairdryers) may have a “switch” to enable you to set it to either 110V or 240V. If you are not sure, check with the manufacturer.

Frequency (50Hz):
North American 110-120 volt electricity is generated at 60 Hz (cycles). Most international 220-240 volt electricity is generated at 50 Hz (cycles). This difference in cycles may cause the motor in your 60 Hz North American appliance to operate slightly slower when used on 50 Hz. Please note that many 60Hz devices such as clocks may not function normally on 50Hz current.

Power Socket:
Power outlets accept only flat three-pin plugs (or two-pin if an ‘earth’ connection is not fitted). See image below. Socket Type: Australian AS_3112 (Grounded).

Note: Bathrooms in most hotels in Australia, New Zealand & and some in Fiji also provide a separate 110 volt AC power socket (which accept USA 2-pin plugs) for electric razors only.

The difference between an Adapter and Converter

1) Adapters do not convert current from 240V to 110V for US appliances. So Adapters can only be used for US appliances that accept BOTH 240V and 110V (normally those appliances will have a “switch”).

2) For those US appliances that do not accept both 240V and 110V, then a converter must be use to convert the current – otherwise the appliance may be seriously damaged.
